The Essence Of Kibbe’s Theory On Body Types And Clothing Styles [PART TWO]

The Body Types

Dramatic (All Yang): The main characteristics of a dramatic body type is being 5 ft 5 inches and over. Their bone structure is angular with sharp edges. They can have square or narrow shoulders as well as a narrower hip. Their facial structures are prominent and sharp (jawline, cheekbones, nose etc). In addition, they have taut skin and a strong vertical or straight body that lacks in the chest region (small or flat chested) which can be maintained even when they gain or lose weight. Their hands and feet are long and narrow.
Examples of a dramatic type would be Tilda Swinton or Taylor Swift.

Classic (In-Between Yin AND Yang): The main characteristics of a classic body type is being between 5 ft 4 inches and 5 ft 7 inches. They are symmetrical (evenly spaced facial features) because the entire face and body is balanced and have little to no contrast. They are vaguely angular, faintly straight and have slightly tapered shoulders. Their hands and feet are moderately sized in proportion to their body. Even when they gain weight, the excess weight spreads all over the body equally. Since Classic is such a complete blend of yin and yang, it is a very rare body type.
Example of a classic type would be Grace Kelly.

Gamine (Combination): The main characteristics of a gamine body type is being 5 feet 5 inches and under in height. They have a contrast of dramatic and romantic features. Their bone structure tends to be narrow and sharp. Their facial structures can have different yin and yang fragments such as large eyes, sharp nose or soft cheeks and a strong thin lip. Their faces resemble adolescence. Usually their heads are larger in proportion and they tend to have square or tapered shoulders (usually on the narrower side, as opposed to broad). Hands and feet are moderate to small.
Example of a gamine type would be Emma Watson.

Natural (Yang Dominant): The main characteristics of a natural body type is being moderate in height to 5 ft 8 inches. They are similar to a dramatic except the sharpness in their structure is blunter. Basically, slightly straight or square, faintly angular and broad shoulders. Even the facial contours (nose, jawline, cheekbones) is blunt and angular. Hands and feet tend to be moderate to slightly large or squarish. When they gain weight, the fat is distributed into the chest, hips, waist and tights which maintains their rectangular body shape. Naturals often have smaller heads in proportion, so they generally look taller than their actual height.
Example of a natural type would be Jennifer Aniston.

Romantic (All Yin): The main characteristics of a romantic body type is being 5 ft 5 and under in height. They are wide and have delicate or small facial features (nose, jawline, cheekbone etc). Their shoulders are rounded or slanted. The bone structure is soft but slightly wide, fleshly limbs and a curvy and voluptuous figure. They retain their curves even if they lose or gain weight.
Example of a romantic type would be Marilyn Monroe.

Soft Dramatic (Sub Group): The main characteristics of a soft dramatic is being 5 ft 5 and over in height. Their bones are large, angular or long. Their facial bones are yang dominant because it tends to be sharp and prominent (exotic cheekbones, jawline, nose etc) but their flesh and body figure is yin dominant. In addition, their hands and feet are large but can be wide, narrow or long.
Examples of a soft dramatic type would be Sophia Loren or Tyra Banks.

Theatrical Romantic (Sub Group): The main characteristics of a theatrical romantic is being 5ft 5 and under in height. They are small, delicate and curvy with a slight sharpness to their edges (cheekbones, jawline, nose and tapered shoulders). However, the sharpness is more apparent in the facial features. Their hands and feet are small in proportion to their height.
Example of a theatrical romantic type would be Rihanna.

Soft Classic (Sub Group): The main characteristics of a soft classic is being moderately tall to 5 ft 6 in height. They tend to have additional waist definition as well as softer facial structures in comparison to the classic body type. Nonetheless, they will still have an overall symmetrical appearance but will have a distinctly wider or heavier bone structure in comparison to a romantic body type. In addition, they lack in contrasting sharpness in their overall appearance unlike the theatrical romantic.
Example of a soft classic type would be Kristen Dunst.

Dramatic Classic (Sub Group): The main characteristics of a dramatic classic is being moderately tall to 5 ft 7 in height. Overall symmetrical but with slightly angular, straight, square or wide features. The drama is highlighted in their face and bone structure. This gives them a balanced appearance.
Example of a dramatic classic type would be Michelle Dockery.

Soft Gamine (Sub Group): The main characteristics of a soft gamine is being under 5ft in height. They tend to be small and delicate in form but slightly broad and angular at the same time. The angular edges predominantly show within the shoulders (tapered or square). In addition, they have a feminine and girly appearance. The body resembles an hourglass but not too shapely (they develop more curves when they gain weight). They have small hands and feet (can be fleshly and wide). In addition, they have delicately broad facial contours (nose, cheekbones, and jawline – which may have extra bits of sharpness). Arms and legs tend to be short in proportion to their height.
Example of a soft gamine type would be Jenna Coleman.

Flamboyant Gamine (Sub Group): The main characteristics of a flamboyant gamine is being 5 ft 6 and under in height. They have a tomboy appearance because of the lack in curves. They have slightly wide or broad facial outlines (nose, cheekbone, jawline etc). Their arms and legs can be longer in proportion to their height as well as their hands and feet also appears larger (if very petite they can appear squarish).
Example of a flamboyant gamine type would be Audrey Tautou.

Soft Natural (Sub Group): The main characteristics of a soft natural is being moderate to 5ft 7 in height. They are similar to soft dramatic in the sense that their flesh is yin dominant; womanly, curvy figure, small waist -that’s in proportion to the bust and hips as well as a vaguely fleshy upper arms and thighs but their bone structure is yang dominant.
Examples of a soft natural type would be Britney Spears or Katy Perry.

Flamboyant Natural (Sub Group): The main characteristics of a flamboyant natural is being 5 ft 5 and over. They tend to have taut skin and a very defined musculature body composition (unless overweight) as well as long legs. Their overall body appearance is lean, strong and straight because they lack in the bust and hips unless overweight. Their shoulders tend to be wider than their hips and they have a smaller head in contrast to the body.
Examples of a flamboyant type would be Gigi Hadid or Cameron Diaz.

  1. I always wonder… If gamines are never above 5’5, how come Emma Watson (5’8) and Lily Cole (5’10) are called Gamines? Flamboyant ones, but still… By this definition, they should be dramatics or flamboyant naturals?

    1. Hello, Fanny and thank you for your comment. Unfortunately, I’m also learning about how to distinguish between each body type but from my understanding, I think it depends on which factors or characteristics is more apparent overall. In terms of Emma Watson, her face is more ‘childish/doll’ like. Bare in mind it all depends on how the body showcases both yin and yang so it will vary. I hope this was somewhat helpful :).

      1. Yeah I have discussed it in various comments on youtube. Both Aly Art and Merriam Style have active commenters 🙂

Merriam says that it’s not about how tall you ARE, but how tall you LOOK in regards to your own body. In that case it makes more sense. But there are people who have listed Charlize Theron as a Theatrical Romantic, and then Im back to being confused again, because she does NOT look small, even if she might not look her natural 5’10.

As for Lily Cole, her face is very gamine, but her body seems to be purely dramatic. So it’s definately confusing the *** out of me.
